OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney's approval rating has dropped, according to new polling data from Angus Reid. The survey indicates that Canadians are becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the rookie prime minister, who has experienced a six-point decline in popularity.

Angus Reid noted, "Summer has come and mostly gone, and no trade deal has materialized between Canada and its largest trading partner — the United States." This lack of progress, along with Carney's decision to eliminate counter-tariffs and rising expectations regarding issues like housing affordability and national development, has led to a decrease in his personal approval ratings for the first time since he took office.

Currently, Pierre Poilievre's Conservative Party holds a slight edge over the Liberals, with a 40% approval rating compared to the Liberals' 38%. Support for the Conservatives is strongest in Saskatchewan at 65%, followed by 62% in Alberta, 49% in Manitoba, 43% in Ontario, and 41% in British Columbia.

In contrast, the Liberals are leading in Atlantic Canada, where they have 51% support compared to 37% for the Conservatives. In Ontario, both parties are nearly tied at 43%. The New Democratic Party (NDP) has a significantly lower approval rating at just 10%.

Carney's positive approval rating has fallen to 51%, down from a post-election high of 57% in the summer. Negative impressions of him have risen from 29% in June to 41% in the latest poll.

Opinions on Carney's decision to drop most counter-tariffs on U.S. imports are divided, with 39% of respondents supporting the move and 35% opposing it. Confidence in Carney's ability to negotiate a deal with U.S. President Donald Trump is also split, with 46% expressing confidence and 45% lacking it.

A significant portion of Canadians, 50%, believe the Carney administration is steering the country in the wrong direction, while 28% think it should maintain its current course.

Poilievre, who recently secured a seat in the House of Commons during the Battle River-Crowfoot byelection, has a favorability rating of 36%.

The Angus Reid poll was conducted from August 29 to September 4, surveying 3,656 Canadian adults who are members of the Angus Reid forum. While margins of error cannot be applied to online panels, an equivalent sample would yield a margin of ±1.5%, 19 times out of 20.
