On April 19, 1980, a hiker came across skeletal remains just off the Hardwood Lookout Trail. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers from the Whitney detachment, assisted by the Ministry of Natural Resources, conducted a search of the area and recovered additional remains, clothing, camping gear, a wallet and a boot. Examinations by the Office of the Chief Coroner (OCC) and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OFPS) determined the individual was a white male, estimated to be between 18 and 21 years old.
