A member of a bizarre transgender cult that is accused of a slew of murders across the U.S. now faces the death penalty, federal authorities said on Friday.

Among the murders the group — which calls itself Zizians after their leader — has been connected to is the slaying of U.S. Border Patrol agent David Maland on Jan. 20 in northern Vermont near the Canadian border.

But for Zizians, a rag-tag group of radical computer scientists focused on veganism, gender identity and artificial intelligence, the timing was poor.

On the same day as the wild shootout in Vermont, U.S. President Donald Trump was inaugurated and signed a bill lifting the moratorium on the federal death penalty.
