The Dayton Police Department is participating in an initiative aimed at improving interactions between law enforcement and people with autism spectrum disorder during traffic stops.

Dayton police say the department is now participating in the Blue Envelope Program, a tool that helps bridge the communication gap between officers and drivers with autism.

The program encourages drivers with autism to store important documents like, driver's license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance, inside a specially marked blue envelope.

The envelope acts as a visual cue for officers that the driver may have autism. This allows officers to approach the situation with increased understanding and sensitivity.
