KENTUCKY (WKYT) - Today’s Good Question is: We frequently are made aware by your station of rescues and injuries to persons in the area of Powell County and Red River Gorge. These frequent rescues by underfunded fire/rescue agencies have to be a tremendous financial drain. Are any of those injured persons ever sent a bill to compensate for the rescue efforts?

No, they are not sent a bill.

If someone who is rescued has to be transported by ambulance, then they may be charged by EMS. But that is a separate organization.

People with both the Powell County and Wolfe County search and rescue teams tell me there is no charge for their services. Both teams are made up of volunteers.

And John May with Wolfe County told me state law doesn’t allow them to charge anything.
