It was a friendship formed in school, then waned as life, work, marriage and family got in the way.

But the tie between Kathleen Folbigg and Tracy Chapman was never lost, and instead strengthened through two decades of grief, adversity and a united struggle for freedom, as told in a new book.

Inside Out: An Incredible Friendship and Fight for Justice details the long and arduous challenge to overturn Ms Folbigg's 2003 conviction for murdering eight-month-old Patrick, 10-month-old Sarah, 18-month-old Laura, and the manslaughter of 19-day-old Caleb.

Ms Folbigg was sentenced to 40 years in prison, later reduced to a 25-year non-parole period over the deaths of her four children.
