OTTAWA COUNTY, MI – A man whose boat and trailer broke free and killed a woman walking on a Holland Township bike path was convicted Friday, Sept. 5, of six driving offenses.

Alejandro Chavez, 45, of Holland, will be sentenced on Oct. 6 by Ottawa County Circuit Judge Jon Hulsing, who presided over the three-day jury trial.

Carmen Tirado , 62, of Holland Township, died at the scene of the July 21, 2024, crash on Quincy Street near 140th Avenue. A 38-year-old Holland-area resident who was walking with Tirado was seriously injured and airlifted from the scene to the hospital.

Chavez was driving a 2004 GMC pickup truck westbound on Quincy while towing a pontoon boat and trailer when the trailer broke free. It struck the two walkers who were trapped underneath until freed by rescuers.
