For the first time in his NHL career, Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price has been traded.
The 38-year-old was just dealt from the Canadiens to the San Jose Sharks, in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round pick and prospect Gannon Laroque.
Price, who hasn’t played a game since April 29, 2022, was forced to step away from hockey due to recurring knee problems, so he won’t play a game for the Sharks.
The trade is all about clearing cap space for the Canadiens, freeing them up from carrying Price’s $10.5 million cap hit for the final season of his contract. They have been over the salary cap for the last three seasons due to his cap hit, and they’ve gotten around it by burying his salary on long-term injured reserve (LTIR).
