Hundreds of students at Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School on Friday afternoon staged a walkout in protest of what they described as lax federal and state gun laws that put their lives at risk every day.

In the wake of the Aug. 27 shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis — which left two children dead and 18 people wounded — one Maggie Walker student said that the threat of gun violence in his school is a daily anxiety.

The incident in Minneapolis was among 292 other mass shootings in the U.S. this year, according to Gun Violence Archive, which tracks gun violence data and defines a mass shooting as a shooting in which four or more people are struck by gunfire.
