LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - September 2025, the city of Louisville reflects on the 50th anniversary of court-ordered busing.

Students crisscrossed the city for hours on buses heading to areas of the city they had never been to before.

At the time, Harvey Sloane was Louisville’s mayor, and he was mandated to integrate Louisville schools. Mayor Sloane was very eager and open to talking about what really happened and how it happened as the Jefferson County Public School System made national news and history as the buses rolled out to integrate their schools.

In 1975, Louisville, Kentucky, faced a federal court order from Judge James F. Gordon to merge its predominantly white county schools with the city’s mostly Black schools.
