WATERBURY, Conn. (WFSB) - A massive fortune is on the line for Powerball players.

The 1.8 billion dollar jackpot is the second largest in the lottery’s history.

The chances of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292 million. You are more likely to be struck by lightning twice.

Still, someone has to win, and if that’s you, you should avoid these common mistakes that lottery winners fall for.

Kurt Panouses is a lawyer who has represented dozens of lottery winners.

“Don’t sign or mark the ticket in any way. Just make a copy of the front and back of the ticket. You can take a selfie with the ticket, so you could show that you had possession of it. Then, put the ticket in a safe deposit box,” said Panouses.

He says winners should first get a lawyer, and don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions.
