MOUNT VERNON, Indiana — A southern Indiana couple was arrested Tuesday after police say they rescued nine children and six animals from a feces- and urine-covered home.

According to a release from the Mount Vernon Police Department , on Sept. 2 police were called to a house in the 400 block of East 5th Street after a caller reported concerns about the number of animals inside the home.

When officers arrived, two people, 48-year-old David Harner and 29-year-old Terri Harner, answered the door and reportedly allowed officers inside.

Police say before entering the home, officers became overwhelmed by the smell of feces and urine coming from inside. Almost immediately after entering the house, officers reportedly had to step over "multiple piles of animal feces" and a puddle of urine on the
