Harold Matzner, nicknamed "Mr. Palm Springs" for his larger-than-life presence as a philanthropist, businessman and arts administrator, died Thursday, Sept. 4, in Palm Springs. He was 88 years old.

His death was confirmed Thursday evening by his family via an obituary sent by the Palm Springs International Film Festival PR team. The obituary stated that Matzner died "after a brief illness."
