TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) —September is National Sepsis Awareness Month, a time to recognize the dangers of the leading cause of deaths in hospitals.
1.7 million adults develop sepsis each year, with at least 20% dying as a result according to the National Institute of General Medical Science.
Sepsis is the body’s response to infections, like pneumonia, when left untreated or if treatments do not work. Symptoms of sepsis include higher or lower than normal temperature, signs of infection and confusion.
“Sepsis is truly, it’s a time-sensitive emergency, just like a heart attack or a stroke is,” said Jenny Hopkins, Director of Quality and Patient Safety at St. Luke’s. “The sooner you get in and you get care for your infection, decreases the risk of you developing sepsis.”
