LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - During the 2025 Nebraska legislative session, Sen. George Dungan introduced LB 414, which passed unanimously and became law on September 3. The bill creates a suicide mortality review team focused on veterans.

The Nebraska Department of Veterans’ Affairs said the state’s veteran suicide rate is nearly 34%, slightly below the national average. This new law allows the team to study correlations between veterans and suicides.

The legislation holds special meaning for veteran Mike Kunce.

“One is too many,” Kunce said. “Anytime that we can take a situation that’s not a critical mass and try to resolve it now versus waiting until it becomes a major problem is definitely the right way to approach it.”
