CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - There are 21 cases of Legionnaires’ disease in Marshall County, and one person died from the disease.

Legionnaires disease is caused by a specific bacteria that can grow in water systems, like big air conditioners. The exact source of the cluster of disease in Marshalltown is not known.

Most people that come into contact with Legionnaire’s disease don’t get sick, but underlying medical conditions and a compromised immune system make it more likely.

The Linn County Public Health department said places with stagnant water like hot tubs, humidifiers, or unused shower heads can be transmit legionnaires’ disease if not cleaned properly.
