The crash that killed a bicyclist on one of Santa Fe’s busiest thoroughfares in June has been sparking discussions about bicycle and pedestrian safety in a city that, like most American cities, is dominated by automobile drivers.

While many advocate for better infrastructure that slows traffic and protects cyclists and pedestrians , some also have questioned whether drivers who strike and kill cyclists face appropriate accountability from law enforcement.

The topic — and in particular the June crash that killed 42-year-old Steven Ballinger — is scheduled for discussion when the city council’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee meets Thursday. Committee member Gary Schiffmiller requested the discussion.
