KAHULUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A house fire on Maui has left a kupuna homeless.

Though her house is destroyed, the 98-year-old Kahului resident is lucky to be alive.

A 71-year-old stranger ran into her burning home and carried her out.

“There was hollering outside, but I couldn’t make out what it was. I thought it was school kids,” said Hana resident Marilyn Bruce.

She and her husband, James “Jeff” Bruce, were visiting her sister in Kahului last Monday when the home in front of the property went up in flames.

The fire broke out around 10:45 a.m. on Holua Drive in Kahului, and two people in their 90s were inside.
