A senior minister has denied the government is in crisis following former deputy Angela Rayner's resignation on Friday and a major Cabinet reshuffle.

Angela Rayner quit following an investigation into her tax affairs. She faced a backlash after admitting she underpaid stamp duty on her Hove flat. The Deputy Prime Minster handed in her resignation to Sir Keir Starmer prompting a Cabinet reshuffle.

But Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister Darren Jones said the Cabinet reshuffle had prompted the Prime Minister to now have the "strongest team" in place.

He added there was no possibility of an early election, despite opposition claims that the upheaval could open up splits within Labour and collapse the Prime Minister’s authority.
