MANDAN, N.D. — The former North Dakota Game and Fish Department director was arrested for sexual misconduct involving a child.

According to Burleigh Morton County Detention Center records, 71-year-old Terry Steinwand was arrested on Friday, Sept. 5, on charges of gross sexual imposition with a victim under the age of 15. He was arrested by the Mandan Police Department.

Steinwand is being held by the Burleigh Morton County Detention Center, jail records say. He has not yet made a court appearance. A criminal complaint detailing the charge has not yet been filed.

Gross sexual imposition is a felony in North Dakota.

Steinwand retired from the North Dakota Game and Fish Department in 2021. He worked at the department for around 40 years, and was appointed as director of the agency by the
