Redshirt freshman Will Hammond replaced starting quarterback Behren Morton to start the second half of the Texas Tech football team's home game against Kent State on Saturday, Sept. 6, at Jones AT&T Stadium.

Tech led 48-0 at halftime, so Morton's leaving was unrelated to the hyperextended knee he suffered last week in the season opener against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Tech coach Joey McGuire told the Tech radio network in the pre-game show Morton moved well and looked good during practice this week. He completed 18 of 26 passes for 258 yards and 3 touchdowns in his one half against the Golden Flashes.

"I'm glad we got to play him," McGuire said on a Tech radio halftime interview, "because we've got to stay sharp at that position."
