There was a time when Ross and John Minett-Jutras weren’t sure if they’d ever get to celebrate Father’s Day.
“I think I always knew that I wanted to be a dad, but I didn’t always know that it was possible,” Ross said.
As West Australians, both men saw fatherhood as a pipe dream for some time due to the state’s restrictive surrogacy laws.
It was the only state in the country that restricted surrogacy to altruistic agreements, aiming them at helping women who could not conceive or carry a child for medical reasons.
It meant WA was the only state where same-sex couples and single men were not allowed to access surrogacy.
