A preliminary report has revealed that the tragic crash of the Glória Funicular in Lisbon was caused by a snapped cable. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, resulted in the deaths of 16 individuals, including two British nationals, Kayleigh Smith, 36, and William Nelson, 44. Another British victim has yet to be identified.

The report indicates that the brakeman did activate the brakes during the incident. However, the cable that broke was in an area that was not visible during routine inspections, which had taken place earlier that morning. The report stated, "The area where the cable broke is not visible without dismantling."

Among the deceased were five Portuguese citizens, four of whom were employees at a nearby charity. The majority of the victims were foreign nationals. This incident marks a significant tragedy for the city, and further updates are expected as investigations continue.
