Commerce Township — A driver skidded off the road Friday and caused a three-vehicle crash that resulted in the death of a 30-year-old Waterford Township man, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office said Saturday.

The incident happened at about 7:40 p.m. on Pontiac Trail at Martin Parkway, sheriff's officials said in a press release.

"Matthew John Szakal was operating a 2017 Chevrolet Trax when his vehicle was struck by a second vehicle, a 2021 Lexus RC, which was driven by a 51-year-old Sterling Heights man," the release said.

"The Lexus driver was heading north on M-5 when the vehicle ran off the roadway and traveled several hundred feet through tall grass and weeds. The Lexus re-entered the roadway and jumped the curb in a roundabout, striking Szakal’s vehicle."
