Pepperdine University set up its annual Waves of Flags on Saturday in Malibu to honor and remember the 2,977 victims of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 known as 9/11.
More than 300 volunteers including students, faculty members and staff from the university, raised American flags representing those who were killed — and also one national flag for each foreign country who lost citizens that day.
Planting the first flag this year at the university’s Alumni Park in Malibu was John Bossler, a Pepperdine 1980 alumnus who was at the World Trade Center in New York City when the terrorists crashed two planes into the 110-story-tall Twin Towers of the World Trade Center and destroyed the entire complex.
