A former U.S. Postal Service mail carrier from Massachusetts was arrested Friday for allegedly stealing packages containing prescription medications from customers on his route in Waltham.
The U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts said Friday that Michael Vernon, 52, of Somerville, had been indicted by a federal grand jury on one count of theft of mail by an officer or employee.

Charging documents show Vernon worked as a mail carrier in Waltham for about 18 months, from around June 2022 through January 2024. During that time, officials say Vernon allegedly used his official position to rifle through the contents of mail entrusted to him, stealing bottles of prescription drugs that he found inside those packages.
