In our community, hunger often hides in plain sight. You may pass by families in the grocery store or at school pickup who are struggling to put food on the table, yet they don’t qualify for federal nutrition programs like SNAP. This is the reality of the “SNAP Gap,” where hardworking households earn too much to qualify for assistance, but far too little to meet the rising costs of housing, food, transportation, and healthcare.

In DuPage County, a family of three needs nearly $90,000 a year to cover basic expenses, but SNAP eligibility ends at just over $42,000. Recent cuts to SNAP funding mean even more families will fall into this gap, turning to Loaves & Fishes for help.
