AUSTIN, Texas — Two Austin neighborhoods have received a significant recognition from the state that could help preserve their artistic and cultural identity.

This week, the Texas Commission on the Arts named the Govalle neighborhood and the 5th Street Mexican American Heritage Corridor as two of the state’s newest designated cultural districts. The designation opens the door to year-round support, including access to state grants and marketing resources.

Though often overshadowed by nearby areas like Cesar Chavez and Mueller, Govalle's new status as a cultural district could help level the playing field — and keep artists in the area.
