One word can encapsulate the entirety of Southern football’s 30-7 loss to Alabama State .
Turnovers.
After having two turnovers in last week’s 34-29 win at Mississippi Valley State, the Jaguars doubled that number of giveaways Saturday night at A.W. Mumford Stadium. The issues were glaring and need to be fixed if Southern wants a shot at representing the West Division of the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game for a second straight season.
Even so, the loss doesn’t impact Southern's ultimate goal because the game doesn't count in the SWAC standings. Players like senior defensive tackle Zak Yassine said in the postgame news conference that the pain from the loss still hurts regardless of its nonconference game distinction.
