A spectacular Blood Moon will glow in UK skies today, and some lucky sky watchers will be able to witness totality during a lunar eclipse.
This month's full Moon is a special one; as the Corn Moon rises above the horizon, it will likely be shining a stunning rust-orange-red .
This is because September 7 marks a lunar eclipse , also known as a Blood Moon. This phenomenon occurs when the Moon, Sun, and Earth align in such a way that the Moon passes out of the Sun's rays and into the Earth's shadow.
When Earth blocks some of the Sun's light from reaching the Moon, its atmosphere scatters blue light and lets red light pass through, covering the Moon in a coppery glow.
