Today a national test of the Emergency Alert system is taking place - with a 10-second siren set to go off on all compatible mobile phones.

UK motorists have been issued a warning ahead of the test to keep them safe and to avoid risking a potential fine.

The alert is set to go off at 3pm today (Sunday, September 7) and should reach all mobile phones and tablets connected to 4G or 5G, as long as they have the alerts turned on, even if they are set to silent.

Since last being tested on a nationwide scale in April 2023, the UK's Emergency Alert system has been deployed several times during real emergencies, such as Storm Darragh when weather conditions posed a threat to lives.
