ACADIA NATIONAL PARK, Maine (WABI) - August was the busiest month Acadia National Park has seen in the past 36 years.

According to data from the National Park Service, there were 842,827 recreational visitors to Acadia in August, up 45,797 from the month before.

It is the most visitors in a single month to the park since August 1989, when 1,045,060 visited.

The vast majority of visitors were to Mount Desert Island, which includes Park Loop Road, Cadillac Mountain and Jordan Pond House.

There were more than 999,500 visitors to Acadia in July 1989 and several summer months between 1983 and 1988 also topped 800,000 visitors.
