CLEVELAND, Ohio – Green Day’s song, “Wake me up when September ends,” is rolling through my mind, as the City Council campaign season plays out in our neighborhoods.

The song is about grief, but it’s also about wishing for more joyful times. That’s what I want for my city – more joyful times – and campaign season is the rough-water path to get there.

My hopes for council elections are moderate. I’ve been privy to the character of our municipal leadership since the early 60s, and it’s not that pretty. The political genetics of our city has mutations. There have been bad players and several saints, but never has the whole brood on the dais been perfect, and never will it be. We can only hope for more good souls than unsavory.
