A YouTube video from Toronto journalist Harrison Faulkner has been making the rounds this week, and it should be required viewing for every member of Winnipeg’s city council. In it, Faulkner strolls through the core of our city, interviewing residents, community activists, and anyone willing to share their thoughts on what Winnipeg has become. The picture is not pretty. Depending on who you ask, Winnipeg is either “dangerous” or “just fine,” but the overriding sense is embarrassment and decline. Downtown Winnipeg looks like a city that has been abandoned by its leaders.
Faulkner’s walk down Main Street captures it in stark detail: Entire strips of boarded-up businesses, windows covered with plywood, and empty storefronts where life once flourished. What makes it even more devastating, h
