BOZEMAN — When a defense holds an opponent to 1 for 13 on third down, that team should probably win most times, Montana State head coach Brent Vigen said.

The trouble for the Bobcats, though, is they became victims of their own self-destruction.

Mistakes piled up in all three phases — a “long list of would've, could've, should've,” Vigen said — for No. 3 MSU to fall 30-24 in double overtime to No. 2 South Dakota State Saturday night at Bobcat Stadium.

The loss sends the Bobcats to 0-2 in 2025 — the first time MSU has started 0-2 since 2017 (which also featured a loss to Washington State and SDSU on Gold Rush).

SDSU didn’t showcase an explosive offense; along with the third down conversion rate, the Jackrabbits surrendered eight tackles for loss and averaged just 4.6 yards per play. The
