Authorities urge people to avoid sending money through services like Apple Pay, Venmo, or wire transfer for items not physically seen or from sellers only contacted via messenger. They recommend asking more questions and arranging in-person meetings before transferring any money.

Phone calls from supposed sellers do not guarantee legitimacy, as it's easy to spoof phone numbers. Many apps for this purpose are free, police said.
