Life in a shelter can take its toll on dogs, especially when their stay drags on far longer than expected. Many pups lose hope and withdraw, curling up in a corner or pacing endlessly as stress consumes them.

But then there are dogs who face hardship with quiet optimism. Instead of giving up, they keep wagging their tails, clinging to the belief that one day someone will notice them.

Gumbo, a sweet Shepherd–Hound mix, is one of those dogs. Even after 420 days at the Palm Valley Animal Society in Texas, he continues to greet visitors with a smile.
