A lunar eclipse is set to take place tonight (Sunday, September 7)
This weekend skywatchers across the UK may be treated to a stunning celestial show in the form of a total lunar eclipse, often called a 'Blood Moon'.
A total lunar eclipse happens when the earth moves directly between the sun and the moon, casting its shadow over the lunar surface. As the moon slips into this shadow it takes on a striking orange-red hue creating a dramatic and unforgettable sight in the night sky.
For observers in the UK the eclipse will already be under way as the moon begins to rise. The peak of the eclipse, known as maximum eclipse, will occur at 7.11pm on Sunday, September 7, Wales Online reports.
