RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — A South Carolina trooper is out of the hospital after being hit by a suspected DUI driver in Richland County just after midnight on Sunday.
The South Carolina Department of Public Safety said Senior Trooper Mitchell Williams Jr. of Troop 1 Post D was helping another trooper with a traffic stop on I-77 near mile marker 9, when a truck with an enclosed trailer ran into the median and hit Williams with the driver's side mirror.
Richland County Sheriff's Department deputies, who are now handling the investigation, said the driver of the truck, 35-year-old Alex Bookert, stopped at the scene after the crash.
However, responding deputies said he showed signs of impairment and was later arrested on charges of driving under the influence and endangering emergency services
