MESA, AZ (AZFamily) — A Mexican citizen who was living in northern Arizona has died while in immigration custody at detention facility in Pinal County.

Lorenzo Antonio Batrez Vargas, 32, died the morning of Aug. 31 at the Mountain Vista Medical Center in Mesa. Right now, it is unclear how he died or why he was being medically treated at the hospital.

Federal officials said Batrez Vargas was being detained at the Central Arizona Correctional Complex in Florence, Arizona.

According to the feds, on March 3, 2018, he was arrested by Flagstaff Police and charged with DUI, a class 1 misdemeanor. He was convicted six months later.

Batrez Vargas was arrested again in Flagstaff on DUI charges on March 28, 2024. He was convicted of this charge on May 31, 2024. Then, on Aug. 2, 2025, he was
