Motorists may have noticed a metal box with some complicated looking attachments recently appeared near the Ryan Road bridge over the Red Run in Warren.

The United States Geological Survey gauge station was installed in late July and was done as part of a regional water quality monitoring network done in partnership with the Great Lakes Water Authority. It monitors several things including water temperature, turbidity, and water height.

Overall, the USGS initiative aims to collect accurate, up-to-date data on water conditions in the Rouge River, Clinton River and Detroit River and monitoring the Red Run contributes to that effort.
