President Donald Trump's latest attempt to undercut New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani shows how afraid the president is of him, according to two analysts.
Shaniqua McClendon, vice president of political strategy for Crooked Media, and Ashley Pratte Oates, senior vice president at The Herald Group, joined MSNBC's Alex Witt on "Alex Witt Reports" on Sunday to discuss the impact of Trump's moves against Mamdani.
Recently, media reports indicate that Trump has offered a job in his administration to Eric Adams, the incumbent Mayor of New York City, to help clear the field for Adams to face off against Andrew Cuomo, the city's former mayor. Trump has also reportedly been helping Cuomo behind the scenes.
Oates described the situation as a "lose-lose" scenario for Cuomo.
"This might start to show that Trump's influence isn't as strong as he thinks it is," Oates said. "Cuomo's team saw this as a disadvantage because he would be associated as Trump's pick. This was a lose-lose situation and the only clear winner was going to be Mamdani."
McClendon argued that Trump's efforts to meddle in the New York City mayoral race show how afraid he is of Mamdani.
"Donald Trump is afraid of what Mamdani will be able to do to him as mayor," McClendon said. "If Donald Trump knows anything, he knows optics and media presence. Him going back and forth with Mamdani is not going to be the same as going back and forth with Chuck Schumer or Hakeem Jeffries. [Mamdani] is going to bring it to him."
