SACO, Maine — On a soggy Sunday, few are venturing out of the house. Yet, Kevin Fitzpatrick is still on the roof and isn't coming down until reaching his $85,000 donation goal.

The rooftop campout began 13 years ago when Fitzpatrick, the youth program director for STRIVE, began brainstorming ways to bring in more fundraising.

“Nonprofits need to find creative ways to bridge those gaps in the budget,” Fitzpatrick said.

STRIVE , a Maine nonprofit dedicated to helping youth and young adults with disabilities be active members of their community, had recently organized a 5K run in 2012. But Fitzpatrick had another idea, too. Peter Brown, executive director of STRIVE, recalls when the idea first came to be.
