WATAUGA COUNTY, N.C. — A man died Sunday after being struck by a pickup truck while riding a bicycle on in Watauga County , the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said.

Joseph Butler, 39 was critically injured Saturday evening when a 2003 Ford F-250 crashed into his electric bicycle on US 421 near Vanderpool Road, according to the Highway Patrol. Butler was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died Sunday from his injuries.

The crash happened around 8:50 p.m. on Saturday as both vehicles were traveling south on US 421. The Highway Patrol said the Ford failed to adequately reduce speed before striking the bicycle, ejecting Butler from the bike.

Butler was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, officials said.

The driver of the Ford was not injured in the crash.
