Parents across the country are being urged to contact HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) or they could risk losing money.

Parents with children aged 16 who are continuing in education or starting approved training need to update their details to maintain their claims. At present, 7.62 million UK households claim Child Benefit - which provides £26.05 weekly or £1,354.60 annually for the eldest or only child and £17.25 weekly or £897 annually for each additional child.

Generally, you qualify if you're responsible for someone under 16, but you can continue claiming until your child is 20. However, when your child turns 16, it's necessary to inform the government to continue receiving benefits.
