Sudbury’s St. Benedict Bears travelled east in what may become a new Highway 17 rivalry with the Algonquin Barons from North Bay Friday night.

Both teams had agreed to schedule this out-of-conference game to start their 2025 seasons, a first of its kind for Sudbury and North Bay Senior High School Football.

While a tornado warning, high winds, rain, Sudbury area hail, and power outages, was the major storyline on Friday afternoon, the night would belong to these teams competing to win their first game of 2025 as the skies cleared up for kickoff, yet high winds remained.

The game began with Algonquin kicking off to St. Benedict and Algonquin forcing a punt on St. Benedict’s first offensive series.

From there, Dayne Meyer and Mathieu Desbiens would take all of one play to get the Barons
