Alex Morgan, one of the most accomplished and celebrated athletes in San Diego sports history, had her jersey retired in a post-match ceremony following Wave FC’s match against the Houston Dash on Sunday.

She now is the first, last and only person to ever wear no. 13 for the Wave.

“As Alex’s teammate for more than 11 years, I had the pleasure of seeing her play up close,” Morgan’s former World Cup teammate Ali Krieger told the Snapdragon Stadium crowd during the ceremony. “She was the true engine of the team. That’s the kind of player she was — someone who could make the players around her better.”

“You’re the kind of person who could make the game look effortless,” Krieger told Morgan during her speech. “Alex, congratulations on this incredible milestone.”
