The Albanese government has acknowledged its new aviation consumer protection scheme will most likely increase airfares for customers.
Transport Minister Catherine King on Monday announced consultation with consumers on the proposed aviation protections.
Protections include entitlement to compensation, such as refunds or rebooking, when passengers experience flight delays or cancellations.
There would also be provisions for access to accommodation, food or other transport.
Ms King admitted the reforms would likely push up airfares but insisted they struck the right balance between passenger rights and affordability.
“There will be some costs involved in the administration of the scheme,” Ms King told Sky News on Monday.
