It has been warned that millions of motorists are unaware of the little-known meaning of a number plate. According to recent research, older motorists are less knowledgeable about registration plates.
More than 2,000 road users were asked about number plates , and 24 per cent of drivers claimed they did not know how to read the structure of number plates. This figure rose to 26 per cent for drivers over the age of 55.
The study revealed that 37 per cent of drivers did not know what the first two letters on a standard registration plate meant. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) refers to these letters as the "memory tag."
