Long Island will see several days of mostly dry late-summer weather after a weekend forecasters said dumped between 1 and 2 inches of much-needed rain across much of Nassau and western Suffolk counties.

Farther east, the accumulation was less than an inch, according to Bill Goodman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton.

"It weakened as it moved east because of the moderating effect of the ocean," Goodman said.

While Long Island has avoided the drought conditions affecting parts of New England and the Appalachians, Goodman said, the area has received below-average rainfall in the past month or so.

"There’s still a deficit," he said Sunday. "Yesterday’s rainfall was a step in the right direction."
